Read this if you’re in the mood for: YA, post-apocalyptic world, atmosphere, world-building, excellent characterization, zombies
Summary: In PLEASE REMAIN CALM, the gripping sequel to Courtney Summers' THIS IS NOT A TEST, Rhys and Sloane are headed for a safe haven when they get separated along the way. Rhys is determined to reunite with Sloane until he discovers people who might need him more—people who offer him the closest he'll get to everything he's lost, if they can just hold on long enough. Rhys thinks he has what it takes to survive and find Sloane, but in a world overrun by the dead, there are no guarantees and the next leg of his journey will test him in unimaginable ways...
Read this if you like:
THIS IS NOT A TEST by Courtney Summers (title is linked to our rec!)
PLEASE REMAIN CALM is a continuation of Sloane and Rhys's story, told from Rhys's POV. But unlike TINAT, which is very internal and character-driven, the sequel has lots more zombies, and it's all about survival.
THE WALKING DEAD (AMC)
Because zombies. And tough choices.
"A Game of Firsts" by Carrie Ryan (a Forest of Hands and Teeth short story)
Like PLEASE REMAIN CALM, A Game of Firsts is set soon after a zombie apocalypse begins.
The Rec: If you wanted more zombies in THIS IS NOT A TEST, here they are! This sequel novella is crazy compelling and very fast-paced, as Rhys and Sloane set out to reach a supposed safe haven. I loved Rhys's POV, and how he realizes how little he knows about Sloane and her inner demons. But this book is about the monsters outside, and when Rhys and Sloane are separated, Rhys has to figure out how to survive without anyone or anything familiar. Like THIS IS NOT A TEST, it focuses on what people do when they're pushed beyond the limits of everything they've ever known or imagined.
The Caveat: If you want the characterization-heavy internality of THIS IS NOT A TEST, it's not happening here. The characters are well-developed, of course, but this book is about SURVIVAL.
You should read this because: It's a fascinating novella about the zombie apocalypse. What more do you need to know? Also, LOVE THE COVER.
